Microsoft mouse detected as standard mouse due to WIN.INI file.
Cause:
The problem occurs when the file POINTER.EXE is not present on the 'Load=' line in WIN.INI when Setup is run. Windows 95 cannot tell the difference between a Microsoft Mouse and a mouse that is Microsoft-compatible unless the statement Load=Pointer.exe is present in WIN.INI.
Solution:
Replace the standard mouse driver with a Microsoft Mouse driver.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)
3) Double-click the 'System' icon. (The 'System Properties' dialog box appears.)
'System' icon
4) Click the 'Device Manager' tab and double-click 'Mouse' in the 'View devices' list box.
5) Double-click 'Standard PS/2 Port Mouse'. (The 'Standard PS/2 Port Mouse Properties' dialog box appears.)
6) Click the 'Driver' tab.
7) Click 'Change Driver...' and select the 'Show all devices' radio button.
8) In the 'Manufacturer' box, select Microsoft.
9) In the 'Models' box, select the Microsoft Mouse that is connected to the computer.
10) Click 'OK'.
NOTE: Pointer.exe and Pointer.dll, used by Microsoft Mouse Manager and by the Microsoft IntelliPoint software, are updated to Windows 95 versions when a Microsoft Mouse driver is installed. These files are not updated when a standard mouse driver is installed.
